Plainsmen Conquer Conquistadors in Home Opener
[BORGER - August 27,2024]
Tonight the Lady Plainsmen hosted their first home match of the season and what a thriller it was!
The Lady Plainsmen, led by 3rd year head coach McKenna Clement, were excited to welcome the Dodge City Community College Conquistadors to the BCAC in a non-conference matchup Tuesday evening. The student section was alive and well to help their home team come away with a victory.
The young season got underway this past weekend at the Scooters Coffee Invitational in Garden City which saw the Lady Plainsmen go 1-3 over the tournament and gave the Lady Plainsmen very little prep time for the Conquistadors.
In the first set, it looked as if the Lady Plainsmen brought their road woes with them going down early and calling a timeout down 14-8. Coming out of the timeout they still looked flat and the Conquistadors took Set 1, 25-14. Set 2 saw the Lady Plainsmen come to life off and fight back to even the match 25-21. In set 3, the Lady Plainsmen could not get a service point through the first rotation and again went down early. They battled back but made some mistakes late to drop the set 25-18.
This is where things get exciting. In a win or go home set 4, the Lady Plainsmen showed tremendous fight by trading points with the Conquistadors and never getting behind more than 3 points. Even 25 points was not enough to decide the 4th set as we went into a win by 2 scenario. With the score tied 26-26, the Lady Plainsmen found a way to earn 2 tough points to take the match to a decisive 5th set. In set 5, the Lady Plainsmen were on defense first losing the coin toss. The Lady Plainsmen took an early lead but the Conquistadors stormed back to tie the set 13-13. The Lady Plainsmen again needed 2 more points to win the match. A hitting error by the Conquistadors and a kill by #15 Zuzanna Zietek gave the Lady Plainsmen the final to point to seal the victory!
The Lady Plainsmen were helped by each player that saw time on the floor, but were lead by a tremendous effort from Sophomore Libero, Mia Chavez. Chavez was all over the floor and diving for some amazing digs to keep points away from the Conquistadors. The Lady Plainsmen fed off the great play from Chavez and the energy from one of the best student sections in all of NJCAA to give the fans a thrilling 5 set victory in their first home match!
The Lady Plainsmen are back in action on the road in the Victory Electric Classic this weekend and will have a chance to repeat against the Conquistadors as they are the host team.
