Lady Plainsmen Win Home Opener Over Nationally Ranked Seward
[BORGER - August 23, 2022]
Frank Philips College took on #17 Seward County College in their 2022 home opener.
The Frank Philips College Lady Plainsmen entered the game with a 3-1 record after spending the previous weekend in Garden City, KS. This match would be an early test for new head coach McKenna Clement as Seward County, which is a perennial powerhouse in the Jayhawk Conference, would make their way down to the BCAC for a 6 PM start.
The energy was high from the beginning as students were able to let off some steam from the first day of classes filled the student section. The Lady Plainsmen came out strong and gave us a great first set with both teams trading points the entire set. The Lady Plainsmen were able to take the energy of the student section and win set one 25-23.
Set 2 saw much of the same as the night had the makings of a great volleyball match. It was another back-and-forth set the entire time with neither team able to pull away. The second set was so close that the Lady Plainsmen needed an extra point to put the Saints away 26-24.
In set 3, the Lady Plainsmen were unable to sweep the Saints. The Lady Plainsmen seemed to be trying too hard to make the sweep happen which saw them making small mistakes that allowed Seward to change the momentum and silence the student section. The Lady Plainsmen had some key hitting errors while trying to make a comeback in the set, which Seward capitalized and finished the set 25-19.
The #17 Seward Saints looked to carry that momentum into the fourth set, but the fans were able to rejuvenate the Lady Plainsmen as they made a run after being down seven. The fourth set made its way back to be back-and-forth again until the Lady Plainsmen capitalized on two key errors by Seward and were able to take the fourth set 25 to 22.
The match was decided 3 sets to 1 in favor of the Lady Plainsmen. The Lady Plainsmen used an overall team effort and a big energy from the crowd to win their home opener against a #17 ranked Seward County team.
