Lady Plainsmen Begin WJCAC Play 2-0
[BORGER – September 20, 2022]
The Lady Plainsmen have started the conference season on the road for their first to games and have walked out with two victories.
They began conference play with a road trip to new member Amarillo College. The Lady Plainsmen played on the campus of West Texas A&M due to the Amarillo gym not being ready. Another fun fact about the match is that the Lady Plainsmen were taking on former head coach of the program. New program, new rivalry, previous coach, historic venue, and the beginning of conference play had all the makings of a great matchup which eventually held up to its billing. The Lady Plainsmen took the first set in convincing fashion 25-16. The Lady Plainsmen were able to keep errors low and capitalized on some big plays and looked to carry on that momentum into the second set which the Lady Plainsmen ended up winning 25-23. The Lady Plainsmen were looking for a sweep to open conference play in the third set. Amarillo College was able to settle in and change the momentum to swing their way with plenty of scoring plays and limited errors which were their Achilles heel in the first two sets. The Badgers won set three 25-20. In set four, the Lady Plainsmen saw their most errors in any set and their first negative kill percentage of the night. The Badgers won set four 25-17. The Badgers had the Lady Plainsmen on their heels after battling back in set 3 and 4 to force a decisive 5th set. Entering set five, the Plainsmen were able to channel great defense, limited errors, and got a boost from the great crowd of Plainsmen athletes that traveled down to support their volleyball team to sway the momentum in their favor just enough to take the fifth set and win their conference opener 17-15. The Lady Plainsmen were now 1-0 in conference play and had another road matchup coming up in Snyder, TX.
3 days after traveling to Amarillo College, the Lady Plainsmen took on Western Texas College in another road matchup. They made the early morning trip down to Snyder for a 2:00 PM match start. The first set looked like the Lady Plainsmen were still asleep and committed 9 errors which saw the Lady Plainsmen drop the set 25-21. After a brief intermission between sets, Head Coach McKenna Clement found a way to wake up her girls to win the next three sets 25-16, 25-22, and 25-21 respectively. The defense was cleaner with less errors and the offensive attack woke up with a kill percentage that never dropped below .200 for the rest of the day.
The Lady Plainsmen have started out 2-0 in conference play for the first time in a few years. They will look to continue their winning ways as they welcome in conference rival Clarendon College to the BCAC on Wednesday night at 6:00 pm.
